Dianora laughed again and gave his arm a quick... 31st July 2010, 12:27

Dianora laughed again and gave his arm a quick squeezeRhamanus had been kind to her on the ship, and courteous and friendly ever since, even when she'd been merely another new body, if a slightly notorious one, in the saishan of the KingShe knew he liked her and she also knew, from d'Eymon himself, that the former Tribute Ship captain was an efficient and a fair administrator
She had helped him get the posting four years agoIt was a high honor for a seaman, supervising harbor rules and regulations at the three main ports of Chiara itselfIt was also, to judge from Rhamanus's slightly threadbare clothing, a little too near the seat of power for any real gains to be extracted
Thinking, she clicked her tongue against her upper teeth, a habit Brandin teased her aboutHe claimed it always signaled a request or a suggestionHe knew her very well, which frightened her at least as much as it did louis vuitton purses anything else
"This is the merest thought," she said now to Rhamanus quietly, "but would you have any interest at all in living in north Asoli for a few years? Not that I want to get rid of youIt's a dreadful place, everyone knows that, but there are opportunities and I'd as soon a decent man reaped them as some of the greedy clutch that are hovering about here
"The taxing office?" he asked, very softlyHis eyes widened slightly but, schooled to discretion, he gave no other sign of interest or surprise
What he did do, an instant later, was glance quickly beyond her shoulder towards the throneDianora was already turning by then, an inexplicable sense, almost an antenna, having alerted her
So she was facing the Island Throne and the doorway behind it by the time the herald's staff rapped the floor twice, not loudly, and Brandin came into the roomHe was followed by the two priests, and the chloe dior priestess of AdaonRhun shambled quickly over to stand near by, dressed identically to the King except for his cap
The truer measure of power, Brandin had once said to her, wouldn't be found in having twenty heralds deafen a room by proclaiming one's arrivalAny fool in funds for a day could rivet attention that wayThe more testing course, the truer measure, was to enter unobtrusively and observe what happened
What happened was what always happenedThe Audience Chamber had been collectively poised as if on the edge of a cliff for the past ten minutes, waitingNow, just as collectively, the court plummeted into obeisanceNot one person in the whole crowded room was still speaking by the time the herald's muted staff of office proclaimed the KingIn the silence the two discreet raps on the marbled floor sounded like echoing thunder
Brandin was in high good humorDianora could have told that from montre cartier tank halfway across the room, even if she hadn't had a hint from Rhun alreadyHer heart was beating very fastIt always did whenever Brandin entered a room where she wasEven after twelve yearsEven still, and despite everythingSo many lines of her life led to or from this man or came together, hopelessly intertwined, in him
He looked to d'Eymon first, as always, and received the other's expressionless bow, sketched low in the Ygrathen fashionThen, as always, he turned and smiled at SoloresBraced as she was, as she always tried to be, she still could not quite master what happened to her when the grey eyes found and held her ownHis glance was like a touch, a gliding presence, fiery and glacial both, as Brandin was
And all this from a look across a very crowded room
Once, in bed, years before, she had dared to ask him a question that had long troubled her
"Is there sorcery involved when you love me here, quilted chanel purse or when we first meet in a public place?"
She hadn't known what answer she wanted, or what to expect by way of reactionShe'd thought he might be flattered by the implication, or at least amusedYou could never be sure with Brandin though, his mind ran through too many different channels and with too much subtletyWhich is why questions, especially revealing ones, were dangerousThis had been important to her though: if he said yes she was going to try to use that to kindle her killing anger againThe anger she seemed to have lost here in the strange world that was the Island
Her expression must have been very grave; he turned on his pillow, head propped on one hand to regard her from beneath level brows
"Not in any way you are thinkingNothing that I control or shape with my magic, other than the matter of childrenI will not have any more heirs, you know that She did know that; all his women sac dolce gabana d

You'll see for yourself soon
enough At that moment the carriage turned beneath an arch, and
they
plunged, skidding and jolting, down a dark, slippery, cobblestoned
ramp
Scarlett was breathless from the thrill of itThen they were at the
riverThe tumult and color and chaos were even more exciting than
the
precipitous ride down to itShips of every size and kind were tied up
to jutting wooden piers, more ships than she'd ever seen in
Charleston
Loaded wagons pulled by heavy dray horses rattled wooden or iron
wheels
over the wide cobbled street in a constant din
Barrels rolled down wooden chutes onto wooden decks with a
deafening
clatterA steamship blew its piercing whistle; another rang its
clangorous bellA row of barefooted loaders moved across a
gangplank,
carrying bales of cotton and singingFlags in bright colors and gaudy
decorated pennants snapped in the windGulls swooped chanel earrings and
squawked
Their driver stood up and cracked hiswhipThe buggy jerked forward,
scattering a crowd of gaping pedestriansScarlett laughed into the
gusty windThey careened around a phalanx of barrels awaiting
loading, clattered past a slow-moving dray, and pulled to a jouncing
halt"I hope you're not expecting to be paid extra for the white
hairs you've put on my head," Colum said to the driver
He jumped down and held up his hand to Kathleen to help her down
"You've not forgotten my box, Colum?" she said"All the traps are
here betimes, darlingGo on over, now, and give your cousins a kiss
to say goodbye He pointed towards Maureen"You can't miss that
red
hair shining like a beacon When Kathleen ran off, he spoke quietly
to Scarlett"You'll not forget what I told you about the name, now,
Scarlett darling?"
"I won't forget She smiled, enjoying the harmless conspiracy
"You'll be Scarlett O'Hara women rolex watches and no other on this voyage and in Ireland,"
he had told her with a wink
"It's nothing to do with you or yours, Scarlett darling, but Butler is
a powerful famous name in Ireland, and all of its fame is heinous
Scarlett didn't mind at allShe was going to enjoy being an O'Hara
for as long as she couldThe Brian Boru was, as Colum had promised,
a
fine, shining shipHer hull was gleaming white with gilt scroll

Gilt trimmed the emerald-colored cover of the gigantic paddle wheels
as
well, and her name in gilt letters two feet high was painted on them in
a frame of gilt arrowsThe Union Jack flew from her flagstaff, but a
green silk banner decorated with a golden harp waved boldly from her
forward mast
She was a luxury passenger ship, catering to the expensive tastes of
rich Americans who travelled to Ireland for sentiment-to see the
villages where emigrant grandfathers were born-or for lady dior show-to visit, in
all their finery, the villages where they had been born
The public rooms and staterooms were oversized and overdecorated
The crew was trained to satisfy every whimThere was a
disproportionately large hold, compared to the usual passenger ship,
because Irish-Americans carried with them gifts for all their relatives
and returned with multiple souvenirs of their visitsThe baggage
handlers treated every trunk and every crate as if it were full of
glassIt was not unknown for prosperous
third-generation American Irish wives to light every room in their new
houses with Waterford crystal chandeliersA broad platform with
sturdy railings was built across the top of the paddle wheel on which
Scarlett stood with Colum and a handful of adventurous passengers to

The two old men, enemies from rival provinces in... 30th July 2010, 12:22
The two old men, enemies from rival provinces in the time before the Tyrants, now eased and distracted each other with whispered recollections from bygone years, stories of men and women who had almost all crossed to Morian long ago
Erlein di Senzio was seldom with them the past few daysHe played his music with Devin and Alessan but tended to eat and drink alone, sometimes in Solinghi's, more often elsewhereA few of his fellow Senzians had recognized the troubadour over the course of their time here, though Erlein seemed no more effusive with them than he was with any of their own partyDevin had seen him walking one morning with a woman who looked so much like him he was sure she was his sisterHe had thought of walking over to chanel watch women be introduced, but hadn't felt up to enduring Erlein's abrasivenessOne might have naively thought that as events hung fire here, poised on the edge of a climax, the wizard would lay down his own grudges finally
He wasn't worried about Erlein's absences because Alessan wasn'tFor the man to betray them in any way was certain death for himselfErlein might be enraged and bitter and sullen, but he wasn't, by any stretch, a fool
He had gone elsewhere to dine this evening as well, though he would have to be back in Solinghi's soon; they were due to play in a few minutes and for their music Erlein was never lateThe music was their only sanctuary of harmony these last few days, but Devin knew that only really applied to the three of chanel jumbo flap bag themWhat some of the others scattered about the city were doing for release he couldn't imagine
"Something's wrong!" Blind Rinaldo said abruptly beside him, tilting his head as if sniffing the airAlessan stopped sketching the distrada terrain on the tablecloth and looked up quicklySandre had already half-risen from his chair
Alais hurried up to the tableEven before she spoke Devin felt a finger of dread touch him
"Catriana's gone!" she said, fighting to keep her voice lowHer eyes flicked from her father to Devin, then rested on Alessan
"What? How?" Rovigo said sharply"We would have had to see her when she came down, surely?"
"The back stairs outside," Alessan saidHis hands, Devin, noticed, had suddenly flattened on the chanel quilted handbag tabletopThe Prince stared at Alais"What else?"
The girl's face was white"She changed her clothesI don't understand whyShe bought a black silk gown and some jewelry in the market this afternoonI was going to ask her about it but I I didn't want to presumeShe's so hard to ask questions ofAll the things she bought
"A silk gown?" Alessan said incredulously, his voice rising"What in Morian's name ?"
But Devin already knew
Alessan hadn't been with them that morning, neither had SandreThey had no way of understandingA bone-deep fear dried his mouth and began hammering at his heartHe stood up, tipping over his chair, spilling his wine
"Oh, Catriana," he said"Catriana, no!" Stupidly, fatuously, as if she were in the room, and could still be balenciaga bag stopped, still be kept among them, dissuaded from going out into the dark alone with her silk and jewels, with her unfathomable courage and her pride
"What? Devin, tell me, what is it?" Sandre, voice like a knifeOnly turned, the grey eyes bracing for pain
"She's gone to the castle," Devin said flatly"She's gone to kill Anghiar of BarbadiorShe thinks that will start the war
Even as he spoke he was moving, rational thought quite gone, something deeper than that, infinitely deeper, driving him, though if she had reached the castle already there was no hope, no hope at all
He was flying when he reached the doorEven so, Alessan was right beside him, with Rovigo only a step behindDevin knocked someone down as they burst into the chanel classic handbags darkn

Let's go to the house now for a bitI want to... 30th July 2010, 10:32
Let's go to the house now for a bitI want to dance some more and eat some more pork
barbecue and have one of those green ices and taste that awful green
beer Matt and Jamie were drinking
"And so you shall tonightYou observe, do you not, that Matt and
Jamie gave up an hour ago or more?"
"Sissies!" Scarlett proclaimedYou're the best of
the O'Haras, ColumJamie said so, and he was right Colum smiled
at
her flushed cheeks and sparkling eyes
"Saving only yourself," he said"Scarlett, I'm going to take off your
boot now, hold it up, the one with the hole in it He unlaced the
neat black kid lady's boot, removed it and upended it to empty the
sand
and crushed shell fragmentsThen he picked up a discarded ice cream
cornet and folded the thick paper to fit inside the boot
"This should white chanel purse get you homeI'm supposing you've got more boots
thereOh, that does feel much better
You always know what to do
"What I know right now is we'll go home and have a cup of tea and a

tired
She walked slowly beside Colum along Drayton Street, smiling at the
smiling people thronging the street"Why is Saint Patrick the patron
saint of Ireland?" she asked"Is he the saint of any place else?"
Colum blinked once, astonished by her ignorance"All saints are
saints for every person and every place in the worldSaint Patrick is
special to the Irish because he brought us Christianity when we were
still being lied to by the Druids, and he drove out all the snakes from
Ireland to make it like the Garden of Eden without the chanel classic bag serpent"You're making that up
There's not a single snake the length and breadth of IrelandI do purely hate snakes
"You really should come with me when I go home, ScarlettYou'd love
the Old Country
The ship takes only two weeks and a day to GalwayThe winds blow towards Ireland and carry the homesick
travellers home as fast as a cloud flying across the sky
It's a grand sight to see all the sails set, and the big ship fairly
dancing over the seaThe white gulls fly out with her until the land
is almost lost from view, then they turn back, crying because they
cannot come all the wayThe dolphins take over the escort then, and
sometimes a great whale, spouting like a fountain with astonishment

"I know," said Scarlett"That's just what it's like thrilled Kathleen by wearing her green watered silk gown to the
festivities at Forsyth Park that night, but she horrified the girl by
insisting on wearing her thin green morocco leather slippers instead of
boots"But the sand and the bricks are that rough, Scarlett, they'll
take out the soles of your elegant slippers!"
"I want them toI want, one time in my life, to dance through two
pairs of shoes at one partyJust brush my hair, please, Kathleen, and
put the green velvet ribbon on to hold itI want to feel it loose and
flying when I dance She had slept for twenty minutes and felt that
she could dance until dawnThe dancing was on the broad plaza of
granite blocks that surrounded the fountain, the water glittering replica chanel jewelry like

and the lilting beauty of the balladsShe danced one reel with
Daniel, her small feet in their dainty slippers flashing like little
green flames in the intricate patterns of the dance"You're a marvel,
Scarlett darling," he shoutedHe put his hands around her waist and
lifted her above his head, then turned, turned, turned while his feet
pounded to the insistent beat of the bodhranScarlett stretched her
arms wide and lifted her face to the moon, turning, turning in the
fountain's silver mist"That's how I feel tonight," she told her
cousins when the first Roman candle flew up into the sky and burst
into
showering brightness that made the moon look wan

That was all she'd saidAll she could think to... 29th July 2010, 12:29
That was all she'd saidAll she could think to say
After he'd gone she had sat in the front room wrapped in an old shawl of her mother's, gazing sightlessly at the ashes of last night's fire until the sun came up:
By then the hard kernel of her own plan had been formed
The plan that had brought her here, all these years after, to this other lonely bed on an Ember Night of ghosts when she should not have had to be aloneAlone with all her memories, with the reawakening they carried, and the awareness of what she had allowed to happen to her here on the IslandHere in Brandin's court
And so it was that two things came to Dianora that Ember Night in the saishan
The memories of her brother had been the first, sweeping over her in waves, image after image until they ended with the ashes of that dead fire
The second, following inexorably, born of that same long-ago year, born of memory, of guilt, of the whirlwind hurts that came with lying here alone and so terribly exposed on this night cartier love of all nights the second thing, spun forth from all these interwoven things, was, finally, the shaping of a resolutionA decision, after so many yearsA course of action she now knew she was going to takeHad to take, whatever might follow
She lay there, chilled, hopelessly awake, and she was aware that the cold she felt came far more from within than withoutSomewhere in the palace, she knew, the torturers would be attending to Camena di Chiara who had tried to kill a Tyrant and free his homeWho had done so knowing he would die and how he would die
Even now they would be with him, administering their precise measures of painWith a professional pride in their skill they would be breaking his fingers one by one, his wrists and his armsHis toes and ankles and legsThey would be doing it carefully, even tenderly, solicitously guarding the beat of his heart, so that after they had broken his back, which was always the last, they could strap him alive on a wheel and take him out to the cartier santos de cartier harbor square to die in the sight of his people
She would never have dreamt Camena had such courage or so much passion in his heartShe had derided him as a poseur, a wearer of three-layered cloaks, a minor, trivial artist angling for ascension at courtYesterday afternoon had compelled a new shape to her image of himNow that he had done what he had done, now that his body had been given to the torturers and then the wheel there was a question that could no more be buried than could her memories of BaerdNot unsheltered as she was and so awake
What, the thought came knifing home like a winter wind in the soul, did Camena's act make her?
What did it make of that long-ago quest a sixteen-year-old girl had so proudly set herself the night her brother went away? The night he'd seen a riselka under moonlight by the sea and gone in search of his Prince
She knew the answersShe knew the names that belonged to herThe names she had earned here on the IslandThey burned like sour wine in a woundAnd vintage hermes burning inside, even as she shivered, Dianora strove one more time to school her heart to begin the deathly hard, never yet successful, journey back to her own dominion from that room on the far wing of the palace where lay the King of Ygrath
That night was different thoughSomething had changed that night, because of what had happened, because of the finality, the absoluteness of what she herself had done in the Audience ChamberAcknowledging that, trying to deal with it, Dianora began to sense, as if from a very great distance, her heart's slow, painful retreat from the fires of loveA returning, and then a turning back, to the memory of other fires at homeFields burning, a city burning, a palace set aflame
No comfort there of courseNo comfort anywhere at allOnly an absolute reminder of who she was and why she was here
And lying very still in darkness on an Ember Night when country doors and windows were all closed against the dead and the magic in the fields, Dianora told over vintage cartier watch softly to herself the whole of the old foretelling verse:
One man sees a riselka
his life forks there
Two men see a riselka
one of them shall die
Three men see a riselka
one is blessed, one forks, one shall die

One woman sees a riselka
her path comes clear to her
Two women see a riselka
one of them shall bear a child
Three women see a riselka
one is blessed, one is clear, one shall bear a child

In the morning, she said to herself amid cold and fire and all the myriad confusions of the heartIn the morning it will begin as it should have begun and ended long ago
The Triad knew how bitter, how impossible all choices had seemed to herHow faint and elusive had been her dream within these walls of making it all come right for all of themBut of one truth she was now, finally, certain: she had needed something to be made clear along the twisting paths to betrayal that seemed to have become her life, and from Brandin's own lips she had learned how that clear path might be black chanel tote offered

"And don't you know he's got that man of his sneaking in all those
wonderful dishes for him to eat his fill behind his closed door? The
old rascalIt does make me laugh, the clever wickedness of him
Maureen's laughter was so contagious that Scarlett finally joined in
She'd done the right thing, coming to Maureen's neverlocked kitchen
door after the disastrous birthday dinner"Let's have our own piece
of cake, then," said Maureen comfortably"You're in practice,
Scarlett, cut it for us; it's under that towel there on the dresser
Cut some extra slices, too, the young ones will be home from school
before longI'll be brewing some fresh tea Scarlett had just
seated herself near the fire with cup and plate hermes wallet when the door flew
open
with a bang and five young O 'Haras invaded the quiet kitchenShe
recognized Maureen's redhaired daughters Mary Kate and HelenThe
little boy, she soon learned, was Michael O 'Hara; the two younger
girls were his sisters Clare and PegAll of them had dark curly hair
that needed combing, darklashed blue eyes, and grubby little hands
that
Maureen told them to wash at once"But we don't need clean hands,"
Michael argued, "we're going to the cowshed to play with the pigs
"Pigs live in the pigpen," said tiny Peg with a self-important air
"Don't they, Maureen?" Scarlett was shockedIn her world, children
never called adults by their first nameBut Maureen seemed to find it
nothing out of omega watch replica the ordinary"They live in the pigpen if no one lets
them out," she said with a wink"You weren't thinking of taking the
piglets out of the pen to play with, now, were you?"
Michael and his sisters laughed as if Maureen's joke was the funniest
thing they'd ever heardThen they ran through the kitchen to the
back
door that led into a large yard shared by all the housesScarlett's
eyes took in the glowing coals on the hearth, the shiny copper of the
tea kettle on the crane, and the pans hanging above the mantel
Funny,
she'd thought she would never set foot in a kitchen again once the bad
days at Tara were overBut this was differentIt was a place to
live, a happy place to be, not just the room where food white chloe bag was prepared
and dishes washedShe wished she could stayThe static beauty of
her grandfather's drawing room made her shiver inside when she
thought
of itBut she belonged in a drawing room, not a kitchenShe was a
lady, accustomed to servants and luxuryShe drained her cup
hurriedly
and put it down in its saucer"You've saved my life, Maureen,
I thought I'd go crazy if I had to stay with my auntsBut I've really
got to go back nowYou haven't even had your cakeI'm told my cakes are
worth eating Helen and Mary Kate edged up to their mother's chair,
empty plates in hand"Take a piece, then, but not all of itThe
little ones will be in soon
Scarlett began to pull on her gloves"I've got to go," she
repeated
If tiffany jewelry canada you must, then you mustI'll hope you'll stay longer for the
dancing on Saturday, Scarlett? Jamie told me he's going to teach you
the reelMaybe Colum will be back by then, too
"Oh, Maureen! Are you having another party on Saturday?"
"Not to say a partyBut there's always the music and the dancing
when
the week's work is done and the men bring home their pay packets
You'll be here?" Scarlett shook her headI'd love to, but
I won't still be in Savannah Her aunts expected her to go back to
Charleston with them on Saturday morning's trainShe didn't think
she
would, she'd never thought soSurely Rhett would come for her long

He'd thrown one reproachful glance at Menico as he went but was not assuaged: the troupe-leader's ample paunch was quivering with laughter as he wiped tears from his round, bearded face
So Devin had gone looking for a bottle of Senzio green and a dark place to drink it in on a brilliant autumn morning in AstibarHaving finally found the wine and the tenuous comfort of shadows he fully expected to figure out, about half a bottle from now, what he should have said to that arrogant red-maned creature back in the rehearsal room
If only she wasn't so depressingly tall, he thoughtMorosely he filled his glass againLooking up at the blackened crossbeams of the ceiling he briefly contemplated hanging himself from one of them: by the heels of course
"Shall I buy you a drink?" someone said
With a sigh Devin turned to cope with one of the more predictable aspects of being small and looking very young while drinking alone in a sailor's bar

The
black Irish soil filtered through her fingers to mix with the red clay
dust of Georgia"Ach, Pa," she murmured, and the meter of her
words
was Irish, "it's a grand place to be sure, County MeathYou're

didn't know you should be having a fine wake and all the stories told

Scarlett was glad she hadn't told anyone in Savannah about her plan
to
take Wade and Ella back to Ireland with herNow she didn't have to

to tell the chanel cambon purse truth, that her own children didn't want her, that they
were strangers to her and she to themShe couldn't admit to anyone,
not even herself, how much it hurt and how much she blamed herself
She felt small and mean; she could hardly even be glad for Ella and
Wade, who were so obviously happyEverything had hurt at Tara
She'd
felt like a strangerExcept for Grandma Robillard's portrait, she
hardly recognized anything in the houseSuellen had used the money

but their new baby only reminded her how much bolsas prada she missed CatIt

been the best thing about the CountyBut she'd been glad to leave
Tara, and that hurt, tooIf she didn't know how much Wade loved it,
it would have broken her heart that she could hardly wait to get
away
At least her son was taking her placeShe saw her new lawyer in
Atlanta after the Tara visit, and she made a will, leaving her
two-thirds share of Tara to her sonShe wasn't going to do like her

"She looks so brown and healthy!" Scarlett exclaimed"And no
wonder
to it," said Maureen"She loves the sunshine that much, she takes off
her bonnet the minute your back is turnedLittle gypsy is what she
is, and a joy every hour of the day
"Of the day and the night," Scarlett amended, holding Cat close
Stephen gave Scarlett her instructions for the trip back to Galway
She didn't like themTruth to tell, she didn't much like Stephen

saidThe Golden Fleece loaded passengers in Savannah, Charleston,
and
Boston, disembarked them in Liverpool and GalwayScarlett turned in
panic, ready to run back to the dockShe couldn't go to Charleston,
she just couldn't!
